Authentic Leather

Aug 2023

The term authentic leather refers to leather that is genuine, natural, and does not come from synthetic materials or imitations. Full-grain leather is considered the highest quality leather. It comes from the top layer of animal hide and retains its natural grain and texture. Full-grain leather is durable, ages well, and develops a unique patina over time. It is also the least processed leather, making it breathable, flexible and age well  with care and wear. Full-grain leather also has a more natural look and feel than other types of leather.

What is leather grain?

Aug 2023

Leather grain refers to the texture, pattern, and surface characteristics found on leather hides. It is a key factor determining the overall look and quality of authentic leather products. The grain of the leather is a result of the arrangement and size of the natural fibers in the hide, as well as any additional treatments or finishes applied to the leather.

There are typically three main types of leather grain:

1. Full Grain Leather: A full-grain leather is the best leather you can find. Made from the top layer of the hide, it preserves the natural grain and imperfections of the animal's skin, such as scars and wrinkles giving each piece of leather a distinctive and unique appearance. The durability, strength, and character of this type of leather make it very popular. As it ages, it develops a patina that enhances its beauty.

2. Top Grain Leather: Top grain leather is also made from the top layer of the hide, but it is sanded or buffed to remove some of the imperfections. This leather is still of good quality, but it may not be as durable as full grain leather, and it may lack some of its unique character.

For wallets, we SOLELY use Full-grain leather. For some watches, we use Full-grain and for others, we use Top-grain leather.

3. Split Grain Leather: Split grain leather is derived from the layers beneath the top grain. It is typically less expensive and not as durable as full or top-grain leather. Split-grain leather is often used in products like suede, where the surface is soft and napped.

We DO NOT use Split grain leather for any of our products.

Vegetable Tanning vs Aniline Tanning

Aug 2023

Vegetable tanning and aniline tanning are two distinct methods used in the tanning process of leather, each with its own characteristics and qualities.

Vegetable Tanning:

1. Vegetable tanning utilizes tannins extracted from plant sources These natural tannins are known for their eco-friendliness and the rich, earthy tones they impart to the leather.

2. Leather tanned using the vegetable tanning method tends to have a more natural and rustic appearance. It often exhibits variations in color and grain, and it develops a unique patina over time.

3. Vegetable-tanned leather is generally quite durable and becomes even more robust with age. It is used for a wide range of applications, including saddles, belts, holsters, and leather goods that require strength and resilience.

4. Vegetable-tanned leather is typically not coated with pigments or finishes that hide the natural grain or texture. This means that the leather is more breathable but may be more susceptible to stains and water damage unless properly cared for.

5. One of the most cherished qualities of vegetable-tanned leather is its ability to develop a beautiful patina over time, as it interacts with sunlight, oils from the skin, and the environment. This patina enhances the leather's character and uniqueness.

Aniline Tanning:

1. Aniline tanning uses synthetic tannins.

2. Aniline-tanned leather typically has a more uniform and luxurious appearance compared to vegetable-tanned leather. It retains the natural grain and texture of the hide but has a smoother surface with a soft, natural feel.

3. Aniline leather is known for its transparency, which means that natural imperfections in the hide, such as scars and blemishes, are visible. These imperfections can add to the character of the leather.

4. Aniline leather tends to be more supple and comfortable from the outset. It requires less breaking in compared to some vegetable-tanned leathers.

5. Aniline leather is available in a wide range of colors and shades, and it can be dyed to achieve various finishes, including semi-aniline and pigmented finishes.

6. While aniline leather can be quite durable, it may be less resistant to stains and wear compared to some vegetable-tanned leathers. However, protective coatings can be applied to enhance durability.

Vegetable-tanned leather offers a natural, rustic look and is valued for its durability and aging potential. Aniline-tanned leather provides a more refined and uniform appearance while maintaining the natural characteristics of the hide.

Elegance and Durability of Saddle Stitching

The term authentic leather refers to leather that is genuine, natural, and does not come from synthetic materials or imitations.

n  Full-grain leather is considered the highest quality leather. It comes from the top layer of animal hide and retains its natural grain and texture. Full-grain leather is durable, ages well, and develops a unique patina over time. It is also the least processed leather, making it breathable and resistant to water and dirt. Full-grain leather also has a more natural look and feel than other types of leather.

Top-grain leather is slightly lower in quality than full-grain leather. Top grain leather is also from the top layer of the hide, but it undergoes some sanding or buffing to remove imperfections. It's often more uniform in appearance but may not age as beautifully as full-grain leather.

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using natural plant-based materials. It's often used in high-quality leather goods due to its environmentally friendly production process.

DaVarg uses Veg-tanned Full Grain and Top Grain leather. The cost of high-quality leather products may be higher, but they tend to be more durable and develop character over time.

Matte Edge Finishing

Aug 2023

Matte edge finishing is a leatherworking technique used to give a smooth and refined appearance to the edges of many leather items. This finishing process is done to create a clean and even edge while maintaining a matte or non-glossy surface.

Here is our way of Matte Edge Finishing

1. (Before applying any finish, the edges of the leather item are usually trimmed and smoothed) As we use a laser machine to cut our leather pieces the edges are even and smooth with no rough spots or irregularities.

 2.  To achieve a matte finish, a specialized matte edge dye or edge paint is applied to the edges of the leather.  We use proprietary Edge finish which complements the leather we use.

3.  The edge dye or paint is applied evenly along the edge of the leather using an applicator. Care is taken to avoid getting the dye or paint on the main surface of the leather.

4.  After application, the edge dye is allowed to dry completely. The drying time can vary depending on the environmental conditions.

Once the dye is dry the leather is ready for the next step/process.

The result of matte edge finishing is a clean, uniform, and non-glossy edge that complements the overall look of the leather item. It's a popular choice for leatherworkers and artisans who want to create a modern, understated, or natural appearance, especially when a shiny or glossy edge would be less desirable.

Mature Gracefully, My Friend

Aug 2023

Developing a patina is one of the unique and highly valued characteristics of genuine leather. A patina is a natural and unique pattern of wear, wrinkles, and scuffs that develops on the leather's surface. It adds character and depth to the leather item, giving it a one-of-a-kind appearance.

1. As leather ages, it often undergoes subtle changes in color. This process is known as "color enhancement." The leather may darken or develop a richer, deeper hue, which is often considered more attractive than the original color.

2. With use and exposure to natural oils from the skin, leather tends to become more supple and comfortable, and also develop a subtle sheen. It softens and molds to the body or the item's shape, making it more comfortable and easy to use.

3. While scuffs and marks can be seen as signs of wear, these imperfections tell the story of the leather item's journey and use.

4. The stitching and other details on a leather item also mature gracefully. They may become more pronounced or develop unique patterns as the leather ages.

5. High-quality leather maintains its durability and strength even as it matures. In many cases, aged leather can be even more robust than when it was new.

Leather enthusiasts often appreciate the charm and individuality that comes with the graceful maturation of leather. This is why leather products like jackets, bags, wallets, and shoes are often considered heirloom items that can be passed down through generations, gaining character and sentimental value as they age.

Made to last a lifetime

Aug 2023

1. Full and Top grain leather is known for its strength and longevity. It can withstand wear and tear over time and often becomes more attractive as it ages, developing a patina.

2. Leather contains natural oils that are present in the animal's skin. Over time, as the leather is handled and exposed to air and the oils from your skin, these oils are redistributed throughout the leather fibers. This process helps keep the leather soft and supple.

3. When leather is flexed and bent, such as when you wear leather shoes or use a leather bag, it helps to break in the fibers and make them more pliable. With continued use, the leather molds to the shape of your body or the item it's used for, making it more comfortable.

4. The combination of body heat and moisture from your skin can soften leather over time. This is why leather clothing and accessories often feel more comfortable as you wear them.

5. As leather ages, it develops a unique patina, which is a desirable change in color and texture. This patina development is often accompanied by increased suppleness, making the leather even more attractive and comfortable.

With the right care and regular use, leather items can last a long time and continue to improve in comfort and appearance

Scent of Leather

Aug 2023

The scent of leather is distinct and often described as rich, earthy, and somewhat sweet. It's a unique aroma that is instantly recognizable and highly valued by many people.

1. The scent of leather is largely influenced by the tanning process used. Vegetable-tanned leather often has a more natural and earthy scent due to the use of tannins derived from plant sources, while chrome-tanned leather may have a slightly sweeter odor.

2. Animal hides contain natural oils and fats that contribute to the scent of leather. These oils and fats can become more pronounced when the leather is exposed to warmth or moisture, which is why the scent of leather can be more noticeable when a leather item is handled or worn.

3. Leather items tend to develop a more pronounced scent as they age and are used. The interaction of the leather with the environment, oils from the skin, and exposure to air can all intensify the leather aroma. This aging process is often appreciated by leather enthusiasts and contributes to the character of older leather goods.

4. Different types and grades of leather can have slightly different scents. High-quality full grain leather, for example, often has a more robust and natural scent compared to lower-quality or corrected grain leather.

5. The scent of leather can also be affected by the environment in which it is stored or used. Exposure to moisture, humidity, and even the presence of other odors can influence the way leather smells.

Many people find the scent of leather to be nostalgic, comforting, or even luxurious. It's a key part of the overall sensory experience of using leather products, and it's one of the reasons why leather is often associated with craftsmanship and quality. Some leather enthusiasts even use leather-scented air fresheners or leather-scented colognes to replicate the aroma when they are not near their beloved leather items.

Why is Saddle Stitching Special?

Aug 2023

Saddle stitching is a hand-sewing technique used in leatherworking and other crafts to join two pieces of leather together. It's a durable and secure method of stitching that's often used for creating leather goods such as wallets, belts, bags, and saddles. Saddle stitching is known for its strength and neat appearance, making it a preferred choice for high-quality leather products.

It is done with two needles, one on each end of the waxed thread, usually made of nylon or linen, for added strength and durability.

Saddle stitching creates a row of neat and evenly spaced stitches on both sides of the leather, resulting in a strong and visually appealing seam. It's important to maintain even tension on the thread throughout the stitching process for a professional finish. With practice, saddle stitching can be a highly satisfying and skillful aspect of leatherworking.

Allure of Natural Leather

Aug 2023

Leather has held a special place in human culture for centuries. Its allure lies not only in its functionality but in its rich history, versatility, and enduring appeal.

Natural leather possesses a timeless beauty that transcends trends and fads. As it ages, natural leather develops a unique patina, becoming more beautiful with time and use. Each scratch, crease, and blemish tells a story, adding character to the material. This natural aging process sets it apart from synthetic alternatives, which often show signs of wear by peeling or cracking.

One of the key attractions of natural leather is its exceptional durability. It makes leather an excellent investment, as it outlasts many other materials and often becomes more comfortable and attractive with age. This longevity also contributes to its sustainability by reducing the need for frequent replacements.

Natural leather carries the markings of its origin—whether it's the grain pattern, scars, or wrinkles from the animal's life. These unique features are not considered flaws but rather evidence of authenticity. No two pieces of natural leather are identical, making each item crafted from this material one-of-a-kind.

Leather's natural flexibility and breathability make it exceptionally comfortable to wear. It conforms to the body's contours, making leather apparel, such as jackets and shoes, comfortable for extended wear.

Ethically sourced and responsibly tanned natural leather can be a sustainable choice. By using hides from the meat industry, leather helps reduce waste and make use of resources that would otherwise go unused.

The craftsmanship adds to the allure of leather, as it showcases the dedication and expertise required to transform raw hides into exquisite products.

In conclusion, The allure of natural leather lies in its timeless beauty, unmatched durability, authenticity, comfort, versatility, and the craftsmanship that goes into its creation. It's a material that not only stands the test of time but also connects us to our past while remaining relevant in the modern world. Whether you're drawn to its aesthetic charm, its functional benefits, or its sustainable qualities, natural leather is an irresistible and enduring material that continues to captivate and inspire.

BACK COATING

In most natural leathers, the corium layer is often left unfinished, causing it to attract moisture, get stained, or to have the fibers come loose. The loose corium fibers can also degrade the durability of leather. To overcome this, DaVarg developed a proprietary coating that can bind the corium layers to give a smooth clean finish. The custom DaVarg shades along with back coating ensures the leather retains its elegance and character for a long time.
