Creating the DaVarg experience

  • Design & Function

In DaVarg, no detail is too small to be overlooked.  Every feature is designed and crafted to function together seamlessly. The natural full grain leather has corners and curves precise cut. The hand made red-line stitches are set at an exact distance from leather edges. The Spartan helmet logo faces left and the solid brass hardware has the antique look to mature gracefully alongside leather.

Vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather has a touch, feel and scent that gets better with everyday wear.DaVarg chose such full-grain leather from select tanneries, and transforms them with specific shades and the proprietary back coating. This leather is uncommon and expensive. Give them some care and attention, they are going to develop character and mature gracefully.

Over the human history, vegetable tanning process has been transforming raw hides into durable, elegant leather.Today vegetable tanning has become a specialized art, undertaken only by a few select tanneries. Of all tanning methods, it is the most traditional and recognizable - and the only process DaVarg uses due to the unique characteristics of veg-tan leather. DaVarg has commissioned few of the tanneries who still specialize in vegetable tanning to provide the leather to our exacting standards.

Looking at the perfect red-line stitches, it would be believe they are made by hand.Every stitch on DaVarg leather is hand made, using two needles and a single thread. The thread ends are pulled and hand set with equal tension. These criss-crossing threads create an unbreakable bond , that rival the strength and durability of stitches made by a sewing machine.

The back side of Davarg leather is also coated with a specially formulated layer that bonds the corium fibers together. In most leathers, the corium of leather is often left unfinished, causing it to attract moisture, get stained, or have its fibers quickly come loose. At DaVarg we find this undesirable, and developed proprietary coating to give the corium a neat finish.

In this age of mass produced plastics, Castello DaVarg continues to make articles the old fashioned way - hand crafted, one article at a time. This hand crafted perfection has roots in western saddlery. Just as in leather saddles, DaVarg articles are made with the principle that nothing can match the elegance, character and durability of hand crafted vegetable tanned full-grain leather.

Leather edge finishing is more than just edge coating.A well prepared edge seals the cut edges of leather and binds the corium fibers from come loose with everyday use. Our multistep edge finishing process ensures that the leather edge will continue to look well finished even after years of everyday use.

With exacting designs and crafting, DaVarg minimizes the need for hardware. But when necessary, they are chosen with great consideration. The corrosion resistant naval grade brass chosen for rivets, loops and buckles develops an aged patina, especially as it ages along with leather. The DaVarg logo on select hardware is a testament to the attention to detail and our commitment to create articles that lasts forever.

Character of Full-grain Leather

Grain, Pull up & Sheen

Grain

The untouched grain layer in full-grain leather retains the character of the natural hide.Look closely, and we can see full grain resembles our on skin. Since vegetable tanning preserves this layer, even with every day wear and use, the grain matures and develops further character.

Pull-Up

Pull effect in full grain leather often noticed as natural unevenness in the leather shades. This multi-tone patina gets pronounced as the grain is stretched as leather is bent or pulled. This variations and patina is what gives leather its natural character.

Sheen

The natural sheen of unbuffed grain develops further with the right conditioning and usage.Together with the grain and pull-up, the sheen differentiates DaVarg leather into elegant maturing material that develops character with care and wear.

DaVarg leather comes in five distinct shades. The shades are chosen to retain the natural character of grain, yet enhance the pull-up and sheen. The shades are imparted with penetrating dyes that go deep into the leather's grain and corium interface. Unlike other synthetic coatings on artificial leather, these dyes do not cover the individual leather grains, rather they give them a deep multi-tone patina that enhances the elegance and character.

Transforming Hide into Leather

Vegetable Tanning

Castello DaVarg exclusively uses vegetable tanning for transforming full-grain leather with its natural character and elegance.Vegetable tanning has been perfected over human evolution to transform raw hide into durable and elegant leather. It is still remains the most classical and traditional among tanning methods and the preferred process that can retain the characteristics of delicate leather grain. The transformation from raw hide into leather happens slowly over several weeks with tannins derived from trees and plants - hence the term vegetable tanning. These tannins convert and bind the collagen proteins in the rawhide, making them strong and more durable.

Over time the corium fibers dehydrate, gaining strength and flexibility while the grain layer retains its character through the tanning process. The time consuming manual process of vegetable tanning has become a highly skilled craft, undertaken only by a few select tanneries. This renders vegetable tanning more expensive and exclusive; and makes vegetable tanned full grain leather more coveted and cherished. Due to cost and ease of processing, most mass market leather is now made with chrome or aniline tanning. While they cannot produce leather with the same quality and character as vegetable tanning, they are adequate for lower quality leather such as upholstery or large luggage.

All full-grain leathers are not created equal.

DaVarg leather is selected from mature hides with optimal grain to corium ratio. While this leather will retain its nature made marks and folds, large ranch-brands or scars are avoided. This mature leather has to undergo further process steps to transform fully into DaVarg Leather.

Grading

The vegetable tanned leather comes in various quality levels. The tanneries grade them based on factors such as grain quality, corium thickness, and hide size. Only the highest leather grade with no branding or large marks are selected for DaVarg leather.
