We don't do alligator leather. Or ostrich leather. Or any other exotic leather.
While some may like the embossing or patterns on certain exotic leather, we believe nothing can match the elegance, character and durability of authentic vegetable tanned cow hide leather.
For practical purposes, exotic leathers are very thin (often less than 1mm) and cannot be used in making durable leather articles. They are also dyed or coated heavily and cannot age withe unique patina we expect from high quality leather.
Further, the production of exotic leather often involves the use of skins from animals such as snakes, crocodiles, alligators, and other reptiles. The ethical treatment of these animals, including their capture, farming, and eventual harvesting for their skins are often concerning.
Many exotic animals are listed as endangered or at risk of becoming endangered. The use of their skins in the fashion industry can contribute to the decline of these species. Avoiding exotic leather helps in the conservation of endangered wildlife
Unlike vegetable tanning used in cowhides, the tanning process for exotic leather can involve the use of chemicals that may have environmental implications. Additionally, the farming or hunting of exotic animals may contribute to habitat destruction and ecosystem disruption.
Laws and regulations related to the trade and use of exotic leather are stringent in Europe and in the United States. Since we cannot always ensure the origin of exotic leather, adhering to legal and regulatory frameworks becomes risky.
